| Sydney - I live in Banff National Park, where I ride horses, fish, enjoy music, and explore the outdoors. I regularly view wildlife with my family, including regular bear watching. I won a photography contest in my local newspaper for capturing the first robin of spring last year. I am a "Pathfinder" in Girl Guides, and last year I received the highest level of achievement, the "Lady Baden Powell award". I am pursuing my Canada Cord. In my first science fair, last year, I won first place in my category. This achievement along with the controversy surrounding the beef industry encouraged me to study this topic. Beef farming is very important in Alberta. My great grandfather operated one of the provinces largest ranches. This year, I won the Alberta Genome award, along with first in my category again. I have performed in Motus-O's "A Christmas Carol" at the Banff Centre for the Arts. I intend to study hormones and steroids for further research. I recommend that students are prepared for their project to go further than expected, and to give each step utmost consideration. I enjoy a part time job at a flower shop, and want to study veterinary sciences. | | Grace - I am an active thirteen year old girl who contentedly lives in the heart of the Rockies. Some of my favourite activities include reading, writing, singing, and walking in the woods. I have plans to be an author and have written many short stories. I have won awards such as the Lady Baden Powell award in Guiding, second place in an Alberta wide Remembrance Day essay contest, and received the Genome Alberta award for the current 2015 science fair project. My curiosity and suspicions with the beef industry began while reading interesting trivia facts. My father is a chef and I am a fierce carnivore, so it was decided that it would be of interest to discover if ingredients, other than those advertised existed in the meat we were eating on a regular basis. Once Canada Wide Science Fair is complete, we plan on studying poultry, due to the fact that quite a bit of controversy surrounds that industry. My advice to others would be to be prepared for anything. |

Samples were taken from Excel, JBS Foods, USDA, Bouvry Farms, Brandt Lake, and Prairie Heritage. They were swabbed and the swabs were brought to a hospital lab to be tested for bacteria. |
