| Adam - My name is Adam Dumanowski. I attend St. Mary's School in Medicine Hat where I am a first class honours grade nine student. I enjoy playing badminton, baseball, indoor soccer and running. Being active is very important to me and I am working towards becoming a lifeguard. Besides athletics music has been a large part of my life. I am studying grade eight piano, taking advanced rudimentary theory and in my sixth year of guitar. Science and science fair has always been my favourite subject. I aspire to be a mechanical engineer and enjoy robotics. This interest coupled with the fact that my partner knows someone who is permanently crippled because of a land mine explosion, served to inspire this project. Over the next year we hope to expand our project through more research and robot development. I would like to encourage other students especially those in elementary grades to develop and pursue the science fair experience through mentoring them. I would advise the students to find an interest, see a problem, and try to solve it. All my previous award winning regional science fair projects: wind turbines, robotic arm, solar panels, and Heron's fountain have helped shape this project. | | Jordy - My name is Jordy Sehn and I am a born and raised Medicine Hatter. I enjoyably attend St. Mary's School in grade 9 and I am apart of our school badminton team. Throughout the year I love to play soccer and do so in a league. Truly, I have a passion for engineering and hope to further increase my knowledge of the field in the upcoming years of my education. Our project Destination Deactivation was inspired by a combination of Adam and I's love of robotics and a past incident involving a family friend who was critically maimed by an I.E.D in Afghanistan. We had hoped to help solve the growing landmine problem across the world by using an automated robot to clear landmines. This year was just the first stepping stone towards our solution, which we hope to continue improving in the next few years by making our process safer and more reliable. If anyone were to ask me why would I want to do a science fair project? I would tell them that the satisfaction of making a difference on our planet, as well as learning new things along the way, will make the effort required easily worthwhile. |
