Once upon a time, there lived two young scientists; who enjoyed dreaming up magnificent plans beneath a Newton tree on a hill of daisy’s under the smiling sun… the day begins enjoying raspberry lemon scones watching the sunrise on the sandy shores of San Diego. Soon after, the experience of seaweed wraps and hot stone messages relaxes the mind in Tuscany’s finest, Tenuta di Spannocchia. Adventures begin on the hide of an elephant overlooking African landscapes on the tip of Pride Rock. Next we find ourselves swinging through trees of the dense and lush tropical Amazon Rainforest. After coming in from the powdery slopes of the Swiss Alps, cappuccino awaits us near the chalet’s crackling fire. The last stop to end the super, fun, awesome day involves a dance party with fresh sushi in the electrifying Tokyo Dance Club! Namaste. |
| Katie Van der Sloot Triclosan: Double Danger
Challenge: | Discovery | Category: | Senior | Region: | Kiwanis Southeast Alberta | City: | Medicine Hat, AB | School: | McCoy High School | Abstract: | Many Triclosan based antibacterial products end up in our waterways. In local water samples we discovered antibiotic resistant bacteria. We then created resistant and cross-resistant bacteria through induction with titer plates, and transformation. The Kirby-Bauer method verified these results. Bacteria from human samples contained significant cross-resistance between antibiotics and Triclosan. This shows the potential for triclosan induced antibiotic resistance to affect the North American population. |
