Abigail - I was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. I've been on this earth for 17 years and have grown up to become a wholehearted health-nut. I truly believe that health covers all aspects of life; physical, mental and spiritual. What really drives my passion is the study of industrial activities and their effects on human bodies. I find it is incredibly difficult for us to find a balance in life when we've been stripped away from the natural environment in which we've evolved. I feel it is my duty to inform people on the potential dangers of certain human activities. To that end, through my science project, I explore the extent to which the toxicity from smelter activities in Sudbury transpose to our garden soils and ultimately our food. Good nutrition is vital, but if our nutritional sources are being poisoned, so are we. | Josée - Growing up in a northern mining town has given me a unique perspective on our relationship with the environment. Having always loved nature as a kid, I can to discover how precious our environment really is and how much of an impact we can have on it; good and bad. I became very interested in my hometown's environmental story. Environmental sustainability and healthy living are also of great importance to me, and the local food movement encompases them both. This project was a great means of learning more about Sudbury's ecology and the incredible adaptations of plants. I hope that in pursuing a career in environmental engineering, I will help make eating local clean, green and available to anyone. In choosing a science project, it's critical to choose something you are passionate about, something that you're hungry to learn about, something that can make a difference for the better. |

The region's soil is acidic and laden with heavy metals. Our project's goal was to see how the toxicity of the area's soils would impact the growth and heavy metal uptake of common vegetables, as well as look at ways to reduce these effects. |
