| Denise - My name is Denise Mayo, and I live in Windsor NS. I attend Sacred Heart School of Halifax, along with my partner Shannon Jankari. We developed this project idea after several hours of discussing make-up and the dangers it poses. We decided to experiment with this idea and, with the help of a professor from Dalhousie University, discovered what's lurking on the surface of our skin. I plan to investigate these dangers further in the future and hopefully into my scientific career. | | Shannon - My name is Shannon Jankari, and I currently reside with my family in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am originally from Houston, Texas; although, I moved to Canada this past summer. I am in the tenth grade at Sacred Heart School of Halifax, where I am constantly encouraged to pursue my passions and incorporate them into my academic work. That being said, I have always had an interest in beauty and fashion. Endless days of my youth were spent dressing up and adorning my face with makeup. The inspiration thus came to me to perform a scientific investigation which would demonstrate the true effects of wearing cosmetics. Through my project, I was able to observe the unfortunate consequences of applying makeup, while I received a deeper understanding of microbial proliferation in our everyday environment. Ultimately, I grasped the importance of taking into account my health and wellness opposed to only considering my skin-deep appearance. I therefore hope to spread this message with other young women and men, who try to enhance their physical features in our extraordinary, yet sometimes superficial world. |
