| Carson - My name is Carson, I am 13 years old and live in Fort Frances, Ontario. I have a younger sister and brother. I am really excited to be going to high school in the fall. I love to play sports; hockey, basketball, soccer as well as dirt biking. I enjoy riding and hitting jumps. In the summer my family enjoys houseboating on beautiful Rainy Lake where I like to fish and tube behind a big boat with my brother. In the fall I love going hunting and winter I love snowmobiling and ice fishing. My idea for the science project was because this past winter we went ice fishing when it was -30°C, although it was fun, my hands were freezing. My friend Jesse and I both enjoy the outdoors so it was a great project to do together. We can’t wait to try out our heated ice fishing rod this winter. For a career when I get older I really want to be an Architect or a Carpenter because I really like designing and building things with wood. | | Jesse - Hi! My name is Jesse Esselink, and I live in Fort Frances, Ontario. I also have a brother who is 3 years younger than me. I was born in 1998, am finishing up Grade 8, and am looking forward to high school. My future goal is to become an Engineer and am looking forward to further my education after I finish high school. I have always liked fixing and assembling anything to create something unique. Living in rural Northern Ontario the outdoors is a huge part of our livelihood where we do various sports and activities year round and fishing is one of them that I am especially fond of. When the weather is bitter cold, that doesn’t stop my family and I from fishing. The problem is that we get cold hands due to putting our hands in freezing cold water. When Carson Cole and I were given opportunity to participate in the Science Fair we decided to do it on none other than a heated ice fishing rod. Can you imagine how excited we are for winter to come to try out our new invention? |

Hot Rods: An Invention to Keep Hands Warm While Ice Fishing

Walker E.S. | | Abstract: | “Hot Rods” is an invention that heats the handle of an ice fishing rod using the battery of a fish finder. The temperature was measured with an infrared thermometer. The temperature is controlled with a three-way rotary heater switch, which is connected to the fish finder. Our hands will be comfortably warm this winter while ice fishing! |
