| My name is Jannah McCallum and I go to Queen Charlotte Intermediate School. I'm a year ahead in school, so that puts me in quite the situation. I'm always the youngest in my class, leaving me at a disadvantage, which causes me to be very competitive. I started science fair when I was in grade four, starting with just a simple idea, ' What keeps Carrots fresh in storage.' I then discovered that cinnamon could have anti-fungal properties, which I used in my next years project. The cinnamon changed the way the mold grew. So in grade 6 I grew carrots with cinnamon as a pre-treatment and discovered that cinnamon stunted the growth of carrots, thus the idea for this year's project. I plan to grow this idea into a proper tool and try to see if it would work in the wild, and on plants that are actually grown and not just germination. I think that if you are interested in science, the fair is a great way to start. You can ease into it, and see what interests you. I wasn't too sold on the fair in 4th grade, but now I love it. |

Weeding Out the Alternatives: Is Cinnamon an Herbicide?
