Biography
My name is Sophia Collins and I'm from Nova Scotia. I go to Hants East Rural High and I love all science, math and history classes. I'm involved in the music club and quite a few other activities. All the time I am not spending on science, I'm either playing guitar/other instruments or drawing. I believe a good balance of art and science is what makes me so successful and happy. Once I graduate high school, I am planning on becoming an orthopaedic surgeon because the medical field is my main interest. The inspiration for my project was the fact that when I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. About 8 months later I got spinal fusion surgery to treat it. This caused me to lose about five inches of height leaving me at 5ft. I plan on designing and carrying out an experiment to test if a telescopic rod for the surgery would allow for a few more inches of growth. This is my first science fair but I am already so excited it, and would recommend it to anyone. I would definitely recommend putting in the effort but also just having fun!

Abstract:My project is a study on the condition Scoliosis and the different treatment options out there. Through my research, and personal experience I have attempted to came up with a design for an improved rod for Scoliosis surgeries. This condition is very common and better treatment options need to be looked into by everyone.
