Biographies
Kaelyn - My name is Kaelyn Gras and I am in grade 10 with a full IB program at Archbishop MacDonald High School in Edmonton, Alberta. I really love birds and have a pet lovebird, named Merette, which was my inspiration for this project. As well as the science fair, I am in Ukrainian dance, play the flute in two concert bands, I am a balloon artist, I am the treasurer for the non-for-profit organization, the Catholic Girl’s League, and am the leader of the church choir. I often volunteer with multiple organizations, in and out of school, and because of this; I won the prestigious “Heart of the Community” award at my school. My dream is to be a pediatrician and work with Doctors Without Borders. When I am not trying to keep up with my busy schedule, I love to read. I also love to travel, and I have been to many different places, including Austria, Italy, Holland, Mexico, Greece, and, my favorite destination, Egypt. I am really excited to come to the Canada Wide Science Fair, as I have been looking forward to this since two years ago, when I first heard about this.
Andrea Isabelle - I am also involved in the fashion industry. On may 24, 2011, I placed first winning a $500 scholarship to study at Marvel Design College, gift bags, and my own showcase at the WESTERN CANADA FASHION WEEK on September 22, 2011-2012. I just started to learn how to sew for a week in September and now in spring, I am making it big; being in the news, Edmonton Journal (twice). In the sciences, my friend and I made it on the EDMONTON JOURNAL, USA today, Vancouver SUN, and India times about our experiment to finding novel concepts to decontaminating oiled birds. In my spare time I design, shop, swim, and travel. For the future I hope to be the next biggest international designer, I wish to be recognized for my work in the Environmental sciences and in this Nation wide science fair. I also perform in terms of singing and dancing since I was a little girl. I also plan to study post secondary right after high school and study in the medical field to become an NP or a Physician! I am very ambitious, but a great attribute to my ambition is my humbleness. Everyone is a winner!

Sommaire:The efficacy of three water soluble cleaning agents and a new solventless decontaminant for the removal of Alberta crude oils from bird feathers was established. A novel quantitative test has been innovated to determine feather hydrophobic property. While Dawn™ is the current choice detergent in removing oils, when properly developed, Elastol™ has the potential of becoming the next standard of excellence in treating oiled birds.
