Biographies
Tanas - My name is Athanasius Sylliboy, I am a grade 12 student at Allison Bernard Memorial High School in Eskasoni. My hobbies include photography and kickboxing. I have participated in many activities at my school, the 30-hour famine, Eskasoni Media Project, Aboriginal Business Competition called E-Spirit. My team created a business plan called L&A Photography. We travelled to Ottawa to compete against other aboriginal students from across Canada. Finally, I participated in my schools Envirothon team. We learned everything about our soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife and pollution prevention. I also participated in extra-curricular activities in my community. I have been volunteering with a group called “Parents Against Drugs”. Our goal is to raise drug-free awareness in several aboriginal communities as well as other communities in Nova Scotia. For eight years I have been involved with the Native Alcohol Drug Abuse Counseling Association (N.A.D.A.C.A) Peer Helpers. All peer helpers are trained in anger managment, suicide prevention, first-aid and self esteem training. My future plans are to attend Cape Breton University and hope to obtain a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Once I accomplish my nursing degree, I plan to attend Dalhousie University hoping to become a doctor.
John - My name is John Stevens, I am 19 years old. I live in the biggest Mi'kmaq Reserve called Eskasoni. I am attending Chief Allison M. Bernard Memorial High School located in Eskasoni. My hobbies include playing video games and watching movies. I have been accepted to the Bachelor of Science Program at the Cape Breton University for the Fall of 2011. My goal for the future is to be nurse at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
