My name is John Burns Duynisveld. I'm 14 and a grade 8 student at Pugwash District High School. I am involved in many sports, such as track, basketball, and golf to name a few. I am in my fifth year as an active 4-H member. I have many interests, such as baking, computers, science, math, reading, and raising animals. In the future, I’d like explore career options in several of these areas. This is my first CWSF. I decided on my project topic because many young animals are very susceptible to illness, and some antibiotics aren't as healthy as they seem. I had heard about how oregano has antimicrobial properties and wondered if it would benefit young animals and their growth. |

Challenge: | Resources | Category: | Junior | Region: | Chignecto East | City: | Wallace, NS | School: | Pugwash District High School | Abstract: | Research has shown that oregano oil has health benefits on animals. Fourteen free-range nursing piglets were part of this project; half control and half given a daily oral oregano oil supplement. The supplementation period was 21 days; piglets were weighed every third day. Results showed that oregano supplemented piglets grew significantly faster than control piglets. Oregano oil benefits growth of free-range piglets. |
