Biographie
My name is Mahala Morris and I am a grade eight home school student. I am fourteen years old and I live just outside of Calgary, Alberta. I enjoy science, because it expands my curiosity to investigate how things work and how I can improve them. I have recently won the University of Calgary Faculty Women’s Club Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. This is my first year at CWSF and I am so stoked! The inspiration for my project came from a radio program that demonstrated that plants and other biological compounds from the local environment could cleanse contaminated water. My plans for further investigations include: testing to see if Aloe Vera can remove the biological and chemical compounds from water; and to test the Aloe Vera cleansed water to see if it is beneficial to human health and to integrate the Aloe Vera water filtration system into communities in developing countries. My advice to other students is to do a project on something that you are passionate about and that has ideas that are innovative as well as focused on issues facing the world today.

Sommaire:Aloe Vera was tested in this study to determine the extent to which it could decrease turbidity of water. This study demonstrated a dramatic decrease in turbidity up to 99.3 percent when combined with a basic sand filter. The results of this study have implications for water purification in developing countries where point of use systems are often required.
