Biographie
My name is Brooklynn Watson and I am a Grade 8 student from Sointula, BC. I’ve been competing in school and regional science fairs each year since kindergarten. I participate in student government and music club at my high school. Outside of school, I participate in gymnastics, karate, ukulele, volleyball, and piano lessons. I am passionate about reading and enjoy writing as well. One of my first science fair projects involved extracting DNA from fruit, and since then my passion for genetic sciences has only grown. For the past three years, my projects have focused on genetic modification, and I hope to continue researching this topic in the future. My advice to other students working on projects would be not to worry about other competitors. Just do your best so that you can be proud of your work. Last year I had the privilege of taking my project to the CWSF in Ottawa, where I received a bronze medal. It was one of the best learning experiences of my life and all the hard work was definitely worth it. I am very honoured to have been selected to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair of 2019 in Fredericton.

Sommaire:In my work, I have researched technologies being used to edit the human genome, specifically CRISPR Cas9. I conducted a thorough literature review, a survey to analyze public awareness, and a gene modification experiment to further my understanding. CRISPR Cas9 is a cutting edge technology with the potential to make significant contributions to the field of medical science if used responsibly and with caution.
