| Sarah - Hello, my name is Sarah Schaefer. I am twelve years old and am in grade seven at St. Alexander Catholic Elementary School. After school, I attend dance class, two youth groups, and piano lessons. This year I am on the Mayors Youth Advisory Council (MYAC). When I grow up I would like to be a teacher, so that I can help kids learn and become successful. We got the inspiration for our project when we found that bees and gift cards were a big problem and we wanted to help. Also, when we saw a spitting gecko that hangs over the side of a flower pot and water the flowers, and a bracelet with stuff inside the pearl. Some plans we have for our further investigations is to find new products to create the flower basin, different designs for the flower, and maybe change the colour. Some advice I would give other students thinking about doing a project is to choose a project that they enjoy doing so that they will want to continue it in the future. Also, so that judges can see how passionate you are about your project and how you want to share it with others. | | Crystal - My name is Crystal Coyne. I am a grade 9 student at E.L. Crossley Secondary School in Fonthill, Ontario. I am the youngest of four with a brother and two sisters. Through school, I am into cross-country and track & field. I play soccer, figure skate, and run. I enjoy reading, especially fantasy novels. My favourite subjects are math and science. After high school, I have not decided on what I want to study, as long as it involves math and/or science. We were inspired to design our BEE HYDRATION STATION when we discovered that bee's health was at risk and they are vital to our survival. Sarah and I were determined to make a difference for the bees. While thinking of bees health decline from pesticides, we were concerned for the increase of pollution in the environment. Trying to combine these issues, we started a gift card collection program to decrease the amount that ends up in landfills and created a bee hydrating station with recycled gift cards as a filler. For anyone thinking of doing a project, I would advise them to try to think of something that no one has done before, to be original. |

The design process of the flower basin progressed from 3D printing to silicone molds and 2-part resin. Another environmental benefit of the BEE HYDRATION STATION is that it is made of 40% recycled gift cards that have been collected from local stores. |
