Samantha - My name is Samantha Higgins, I’m a grade 10 student at Hants East Rural High in Milford and I currently live in Enfield, Nova Scotia. I have many hobbies and interests, ranging from sports like soccer and rugby, to extra curricular activities like Kids Help Phone. I don’t know exactly what I want to do after high school but I feel this experience will help give me an idea. This is my first Canada Wide Science Fair and I have to say it’s not as easy as it looks. It is the experience of a life time and looks like it will be a blast but it is a lot of effort to get to that point. My advice for anyone doing a project would be, make sure you're willing to put in the effort and listen to the judges criticism; however don’t take it to heart they’re there to help. Also, if you work with a partner make sure it is someone you trust to do the work with you and try to be patient even when it’s hard to be. That being said, I think its worth it and will be an amazing opportunity and I’m excited. | Mandy - I am a grade 10 student at Hants East Rural High School in Milford, NS, where I enjoy playing Rugby, and Wrestling. I am also a Kids Help Phone ambassador. Growing up in rural Nova Scotia, I have developed a love of the outdoors- hiking, canoeing, camping, cycling and riding. I have been in 4-H for 7 years and have enjoyed many projects especially livestock. I enjoy woodsman and tug-o-war competitions. Post-high school, I would like to study sciences, possibly agriculture, vet science or wildlife. The idea for my project, Idle Free, came to me when I was at the Englishtown ferry dock waiting to board. The lineup was on a slope and we were in neutral so when it was our turn, we simply coasted on through. Eureka! I would like to take this idea to the CEOs of some drive thru restaurants popular in my community to encourage them to go green. My advice for others is that even if an idea seems simple, go with it! |

Challenge: | Environment | Category: | Intermediate | Region: | Chignecto West | City: | Enfield, NS, Nine Mile River, NS | School: | Hants East Rural High School | Abstract: | This project was designed to determine the volume of emissions produced by idling in drive-thrus, and to find a means to reduce it. It suggests two feasible solutions: avoid drive-thrus, or construct new drive-thrus using a more eco-friendly design. In this project, sloped approaches are investigated which would allow vehicles to coast to the take out window, thereby reducing idling emissions and fuel costs. |
