Biographie
Caitlin, a grade 8 student attending Prince of Wales Mini School, has enthusiasm for dance, literature, and science. For Science Fair this year, she pursued an alternative fixative for formalin, due to the health hazards with those who work with it closely, such as pathologists. Inspiration can be found anywhere, in this case, Maple Syrup was the alternative preservative chosen! As a continuation of this project, nucleic acids could be extracted from the plant tissue preserved with 10% Maple Syrup, to determine if the tissue cells were preserved on a molecular level. For any young scientists planning on participating in Science Fair in the future, remember to follow your passion, and good luck in any and all future endeavors!
