Biographies
Julie - I’m a grade 8 student at HSC. I’m a committee leader, elected by my peers. I’ve competed in gymnastics for seven years. I now curl. I play the alto and baritone saxophones. I’m in the jazz/concert band and have accomplished leadership awards for both. I’ve achieved honours throughout my middle school years. This year, I participated in the French exchange. I chose to do my project on trying to reduce middle school student carbon footprints, I created an app with the principle of crowdsourcing, for the grade 7 classes to use as they were learning about carbon footprints this year, in the hopes to enhance and make a difference in the future. Further investigations on my project, I would include making my app more engaging, possibly a game to interest the students, rather than a survey. I would also look into making a program on my app to simulate Instagram and/or Snapchat. Advice that I would give to others starting a project such as this, is to research a topic that no one else has thought of, and also, if you use subjects while testing an experiment or an innovation, aim for larger numbers, it helps with the final results.
Olivia - My name is Olivia Calbeck and I am a Grade 8 student attending Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton Ontario. I enjoy the arts, I play piano through the Royal Conservatory Music program and flute, participate in our school drama production, and play basketball and track and field. I am a member of our student council executive and a house captain. In my free time, I enjoy horseback riding and spending time with family and friends. I have been awarded an academic scholarship and two proficiency awards for highest academic average. I have also completed grade 8 piano theory receiving honours with distinction. My grade 7 teacher inspired me to learn more about the environment and help reduce others' carbon footprint. We plan to further develop our app to improve its utility and influence a larger cohort of students. My advice for future students would be to choose a project you're passionate about, start early, and develop a plan to pace yourself.

Sommaire:The purpose of the innovation is to describe the impact of an app designed to reduce participants’ carbon footprint (CF) using the principle of crowdsourcing. Fourty-one students calculated their personal CF score and downloaded the app. Participants were followed for one week using the app and recalculated their CF. The control group reduced their CF by 0.5 tonnes more than the experimental group, rejecting the hypothesis (p<0.05).
