| From Salted Streets to Salty Streams
Défi: | Environnement | Catégorie: | Junior | Région: | | Ville: | , | École: | | Sommaire: | This experiment assessed whether road-salt was toxic to invertebrates that live in roadside streams. Freshwater shrimp (Hyalella azteca) were exposed to different concentrations (0-7200mg Cl/L) of road-salt (NaCl). After seven days, almost all (>85%) animals in the control and lower concentrations (900, 1800mg Cl/L) survived, but all animals in the highest concentration died. These results indicate invertebrates in urban streams are at risk from road-salt. |
