My name is Andrée Roy-Garand and I am in grade 9 at Summerside Intermediate School, PEI. This is my first time in the CWSF and my third year in the PEI Science Fair. Since a young age I have been interested in the fields of Science and Health and I continue to see myself furthering my education in these areas of study. Initially, for this project, I worked independently throughout the investigation and learned a great deal. To prepare for the CWSF I then worked alongside a mentor which allowed me to further my analysis and knowledge. I would recommend that any serious minded science fair participant find a mentor to ensure that the proper methodologies are followed right from the beginning. In my spare time I enjoy volleyball, flag football, swimming, drawing, and hanging out with my friends. I have lived on this Island my whole life, and I look forward to sharing it with the delegates from across Canada. |
| Andrée Roy-Garand Natural or Conventional ? Does Mother Nature Provide?
Challenge: | Health | Category: | Intermediate | Region: | Prince Edward Island | City: | Indian River, PE | School: | Summerside Intermediate School | Abstract: | Growing up in a family which treats ailments with natural remedies led me to question whether they are actually antimicrobial. My project compared the antimicrobial effect of conventional and natural medicine on bacteria using the Kirby Bauer susceptibility test. My results showed a definite antimicrobial inhibition effect for garlic, and garlic combinations as well as possible antimicrobial potential in the other natural medicines. |
