Smruthi - My name is Smruthi Ramesh and I attend Port Credit Secondary school and am part of the Scitech program. I enjoy reading and drawing and love to dance. In the future I hope to become a researcher in the field of biology. Participating in the Science Fair is really important to me. It has taught me alot about the environmental issues concerning our world today such as shoreline oil spills which is the basis of our current project. I have really enjoyed the process of creating this project and enjoyed the satisfaction of completing it. My partner and I hope to further test our bio-diesel shoreline clean-up solution and develop it into a viable application for oil spills on shorelines. This process has taught me to persevere and never give up when I come across obstacles. | Karishini - My name is Karishini Ramamoorthi, and I attend the Sci-Tech program at Port Credit Secondary School. I enjoy playing the violin, and dancing in my spare time. The whole science fair experience has been a great opportunity for me and I hope to continue again next year. Last year my partner and I focused on the production of apricot bio-diesel, and this year we wanted to find an application for it. We hope to further test our apricot bio-diesel on a larger scale model to develop our idea into a viable product. The process of developing the project has taught me to work hard, pursue my passion outside of school, and research into topics that are of interest to me. |
| Smruthi Ramesh, Karishini Ramamoorthi Prunus armeniaca: The Non-Toxic Shoreline Oil Spill Cleaner
Challenge: | Environment | Category: | Senior | Region: | Peel | City: | Mississauga, ON | School: | Port Credit S.S. | Abstract: | Our project tests to determine if the biodiesel derived from the Prunus armeniaca could formulate a more efficient bio-solvent than the bio-solvent produced using the Glycine max, Cocos nucifera or a blend of these three biodiesels. We concluded that the Prunus armeniaca and the Prunus armeniaca-Cocos nucifera biodiesel blend formulated a more effective bio-solvent than the methods that are currently employed. |
