Biography
My name is Keiran Barr and I am a grade 8 student in Kingston, Ontario. I have always had an insatiable passion for computers, astronomy, philosophy, and music. I am an innovator and a scientist at heart. I quench my thirst for learning about the world and universe at my blog: sciencewithfelix.blogspot.ca, which is named after my guinea pig. I’m happiest when playing music, writing, programming, or golfing. I have a special interest in skin cancer research, as the disease runs in my family. While I am (admittedly!) new to science, the greatest advice I could give to my peers is this: solving a unique problem usually requires a unique perspective.

Nicotinamide: Novel Skin Cancer Chemoprevention
Challenge:Health
Category:Junior
Region:Frontenac, Lennox & Addington
City:Kingston, ON
School:Calvin Park P.S.
Abstract:This experiment used a yeast model to explore the anti-mutational properties of nicotinamide and its potential role as an anti-cancerous agent. HA2 (ADE2-deficient) yeast was exposed to 6 hours of UV-B radiation with and without exogenous nicotinamide. HA2 colonies supplemented with nicotinamide exhibited a statistically significant reduction (P = 0.00001) in mutational rate after exposure to UV-B radiation.
