Biography
My name is Owen Burke and I am a grade 10 French Immersion student at Riverview Rural High School. I play hockey, golf and the piano. I choose my project because I noticed my dad, a physical education teacher, seemed to be losing his hearing without him realizing. I decided to do a project on the effects of recreational and occupational noise on hearing in adolescents, adults and seniors. I am currently developing an app that will help people track their auditory health. This app is a proactive measure towards preventing hearing loss. Science fair gives students the opportunity to do an independent study on any topic of their choice. Students should take advantage of this opportunity to explore and research personal interests in science and technology. Regional and National Science Fairs are great opportunities to expand your knowledge in science and to meet new people and help prepare for a future in science.

Abstract:This project studied the effects of overexposure to occupational and recreational noise on hearing such as the use of loud earbuds (recreational noise) and loud and recurring noises at work (occupational noise) on adolescents and adults that could affect overall hearing. A prototype was developed to track auditory health which could have a positive impact on people’s everyday lives and the health system.
