Biographie
My name is Ruby Harrington. I am twelve years old and in seventh grade. I have been doing science fair since I was six years old and in first grade. The inspiration for my project was the Husky oil spill. The Husky oil spill happened a couple of years ago near where I live. It opened my eyes to the fact that oil spills can happen in any body of water and not just in oceans far away. My plans for further investigations are to redo this project but to alter my procedure in hopes of getting better results. I plan to change my controls so that I can focus on figuring out what I need to do to get all of the oil out of the water. My advice to other students interested in science fair is to find an idea that they are interested in and something meaningful to them. Read all about it! If it is something that they want to learn about they will be so motivated to keep learning more. It is very motivating to learn if you’re the one who chooses what you’re learning about. Science fair allows you to do this!

Oil Spill Clean Up: Sorbents and Nanotechnology

Sommaire:In my experiment I was trying to clean up an oil spill. This is important because there still isn’t a way to clean up oil spills that works well and doesn’t damage the environment. In my experiment I magnetized the oil using a magnetic fluid called ferrofluid. After I did this I used a magnet to remove the only the oil from the spill.
