Biography
My name is Kerry Yang and I’m currently in grade 9 attending Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, in Sudbury, ON. In addition to science fair and academics, I balance my time between playing piano, staying involved in the community, and working at Science North science centre. I’ve played piano since I was 7 years old and am preparing to take my grade 9 Royal Conservatory exam. I enjoy staying involved in my community which is why I am the student voice of Sudbury’s Community Actions Network where we examine needs in the community and make improvements. I’m also a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Health Centre where I’ve started the Up and Move Program and take ready-for-discharge patients on walks to integrate them into independent living. At the Science North science centre, I interact with visitors in the science centre as well as in the planetarium as a live host. In the future, I’d like to pursue a career in medicine to help break down the gender barrier for females in STEM-related jobs. My advice for students doing a science fair project is choosing an area that interests them and relating the project back to their community or a global issue.

Weeding Out the Secret to Antibiotic Resistance
Challenge:Health
Category:Intermediate
Region:Sudbury
City:Sudbury, ON
School:Lo-Ellen Park S.S.
Abstract:As antibiotic resistance is a growing global health crisis, millions of people are being affected every year. Previous research showed that dandelion root extracts are able to reverse heavy metals-induced antibiotic resistance. As I have chosen to continue my project, I explored the role of taraxasterol, a main component in dandelion root extracts, on heavy metals-induced antibiotic resistance as well as the underlying mechanisms.
