Biographies
Lucas - I am a 17 year old boy attending Widdifield Secondary School in North Bay, Ontario. In school, I am enrolled in science and math courses because I plan to become a physician in the future. Through school and extracurricular activities, I have won many honour awards and certificates. However, when I am not in school, I am playing soccer, basketball, and guitar. The inspiration for our project came from watching and reading news articles on large and small oil spills around the globe. We wanted to create a new way to clean up these spills that would be environmentally friendly, efficient, and economical! In the future we want to have large scale tests with crude oil in a large body of water to see how effective our cattails can be in a real life scenario. For any students thinking of doing science fair I advice you to do it on a topic that you are very passionate about. This way you will enjoy what you are doing and you could potentially change the world!
Joshua - I am a grade twelve student at Widdifield Secondary School in North Bay Ontario, With the plans of returning another year for a "victory lap", in order to take additional courses that interest me and to complete my Specialty High Skills Major in Design and Construction, and my Arts Nippissing minor in visual arts. My plans for post-secondary education will most likely entail applying to university for architecture or some form of engineering. Our inspiration for our project came about like many other ideas, the need to solve a greater problem. For our problem we wanted to tackle something environmental related because it is a very important issue in today's scientific community. For further investigations with our experiment we would like to continue testing more the abilities and the maximums of the cattail plant on a greater scale. For any other students looking to take on science fair, I strongly suggest that no matter how difficult the work and how frustrating the results it is key to persevere through it, because often times you can be that one inch away from the solution and you just don't realize it!

Sommaire:Our Project is a Triple E fuel spill absorbent product, designed for the primary intention of aiding in the clean up of hazardous hydrocarbon based spills, in hopes of replacing today's leading fuel sorbent products. This (E)nviromental, (E)conomical, and (E)fficent product is made of the cattail plants "fluff" (Typha) and is completely hydrophobic and preforms better then the leading oil-sorbent products used by industry today!
