Taylor - Hi! My name is Taylor Ormann and I am currently in grade ten. I entered the science fair this year with my Partner, Janine Nel. Our experiment is called Testing antimicrobial Properties Within Animal Saliva; it’s all about whether or not saliva can kill off bacteria. My inspiration for this project is my love for biology and my goal to become a medical doctor. I have always loved biology; its amazing how such small things in the world can make the biggest of differences. Our project was super fun to work on, but in the future I would like to use Staph bacteria because I know that it is a for sure gram positive and I would like to see its effects on our theory on the barricade effect. Lastly my advice to other students doing this project is to just have fun with it. Science fair is a great experience where you can explore scientific possibilities. If you enjoy the subject you’re working on, you’re going to enjoy science fair. | Janine - My name is Janine Nel, and I'm currently a grade 10 honours student in the AT program (a self-directive learning environment) in Olds High School. I am determined, self motivated, and dedicated, and my favourite subject in school is mathematics. I hope to one day be successfully employed in a career i enjoy. This possibly entails following my father's footsteps by pursuing a career in medicine. My family and I immigrated to Canada from South Africa when I was six years old, and I couldn't be happier with where I currently live. I am interested in activities such as pole vault and crossfit, and I love to travel, having been to places like Greece, the Caribbean, and Rome. |

This means that even if saliva cannot potentially kill bacteria, it can prevent harmful bacteria from entering a wound in order to allow a cleaner healing process. |
