Biography
My name is Maria Duynisveld, I am 16 years old, and I am in grade 10 at Pugwash District High School. I competed in the 2015 and 2016 Canada-Wide Science Fairs in Fredericton and Montreal. I am an active member of 4-H and my local church. In school, I compete in volleyball, basketball, curling, table tennis, and track and field. I also sprint and jump for Pugwash Track Club in the summer. In the future, I plan on operating my family's free-range farm in Wallace Bay, Nova Scotia, and continuing to work toward a more sustainable and efficient farm. My project focuses on high stocking density grazing, an intriguing and beneficial method of raising livestock. I hope that my project can raise awareness of pasture-based methods of production, and inspire others to try out high stocking densities.

The Dessert Effect: The Impact of Cattle Stocking on Herbage Intake & Selection
Challenge:Resources
Category:Intermediate
Region:Chignecto East
City:Wallace, NS
School:Pugwash District High School
Abstract:Pasture is one of the largest components in beef cattle diets. The effect of medium or high stocking density on grazing frequency, dry matter intake, and herbage selectivity was studied. Results showed higher frequency of grazing and increased dry matter intake with high stocking density grazing. Stocking density did not significantly affect herbage selectivity. High stocking density grazing has potential to increase animal production.
