| Elizabeth - My name is Elizabeth Edwards, and I am a grade 8 student at Char-Lan District High School. I am on the student council. Outside of school, I enjoy curling, figure skating and horseback riding. My partner and I thought of doing this project because there is a history of skin cancer in my partner’s family and she has to be careful to put on enough sunscreen. We looked at the back of the bottle out of curiosity and found that we couldn’t pronounce half of the ingredients listed. We researched the ingredients that we could pronounce and found that they are very bad, so we decided that we should make our own natural sunscreen. We tested 3 different store-bought sunscreens and our own by using two different materials under UV lights and the sun. If I was to give advice to someone trying to come up with a project I would tell them to try and find something that concerns everyone. | | Grace - My name is Grace Eamer, and I am a grade 8 student at Char-Lan District High School. Outside of school, I enjoy Highland Dancing, Horseback Riding, Curling, and Pole Vaulting. In the future, I hope and plan to attend the University of Waterloo, for their architecture program. I thought of doing this project because there is a history of skin cancer in my family, so we all have to use sunscreen on an everyday basis in the summer. I was looking at the sunscreen bottle with my partner, Elizabeth and realized that we couldn't even pronounce half of the ingredients listed. My partner and I then researched some of the ingredients and realized that there needed to be a healthier alternative as soon as possible so, we made our own natural homemade sunscreen. We conducted tests on materials that replicated human skin, and their tendencies to burn, and the project went on from there. Elizabeth and I plan to do further testing and research on this topic, as we would eventually like to start selling our product. I think that anyone who is thinking about doing a project should make sure that their project applies to real-world problems. |

We determined that no, chemicals in store-bought sunscreen are not needed. |
