Biographies
Monis - I am a grade 9 student attending Brockville Collegiate Institute, Ontario and this is my third CWSF. In school my favorite subjects are science and math. I am also a part of many sport teams in and out of school, such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball. When I grow up I want to be either a pediatrician or a surgeon. This year our project was about using windfall/discarded apples to create an alternative road salt solution. Since we had to lower the sugar level to create our brine solution, to do this we produced ethanol as a by-product. We used many different tests to test our brine solution and found that it works better then the traditionally used road salt, while using less salt in our brine solution. Advice I would give to other students doing a project is that a project should have real life relevance and should be simple and fun to perform.
Jack - I attend Brockville Collegiate Institute in Brockville, Ontario and this is my third CWSF. I play many sports including Hockey, Soccer and baseball. At school I enjoy science, math and gym, Outside of school I like to play with friends, explore and learn. When I grow up I would like to become a lawyer or a pediatrician. Overall I have a great childhood and a loving family, I'm quite the lucky kid! When we began this project we had no idea that we would end up spending a week in Fredericton and speaking with some of the greatest minds Canada has to offer. If I could give any advice to kids that will take part in future science fairs it would be, Its not always the idea, It’s how you represent it and how much detail and work you put into it. In life my motto is that you should always try new things, put yourself out there and take part in as many activities as possible!
