Biography
My name is Neelam Reddy. I am an eighth grader, home schooled in Edmonton, Alberta. I was inspired to do this project after I participated in the Edmonton Regional Science Fair in 2011. My project was based on The Applications of Microcontrollers in Robotics. During this research, I came across a company called Anybots. They make telepresence robots. Anybots had a good product; however, I found their prices too high for the average person to afford. My goal is to create my own telepresence robot so that I can sell them for a more affordable price. My future plans to improve my robot are the following: Enable the user to set up the telepresence robot without having another person on the other side. Create another version where the tablet can rotate without moving the robot. Expose the docking sensor, thus enabling the robot to find the base charger. My advice to other students would be to have a good work ethic and a positive attitude. My hobbies are reading, writing and competing. I'm an avid reader of the classics. I enjoy writing short stories and submitting them for contests. I also love competing in science fairs.

Abstract:The purpose of this project was to create an affordable telepresence robot. My innovative approach to building a telepresence robot was to use off-the-shelf components in a novel way. Built with a frame, body and a height approx. 122 cm , my telepresence robot has features comparable to other commercial telepresence robots and at a price that is 3 – 16 times cheaper than existing competitors.
