Biography
I am a 13 year-old secondary 3 student at Loyola High School. I was born in Boston, skipped a grade, and graduated from Selwyn House elementary school. I received an academic scholarship to attend Loyola High School for obtaining the highest score on the entrance exam. My academic awards include Regional Champion for La Dictée PGL, Loyola Academic Achievement Award for highest overall average, and several provincial and national math prizes and medals (e.g., highest score, Gauss, University of Waterloo; Noetic National Honor Roll). In 2017, I was named Provincial Champion (Quebec) of the Mathematics League. Recently, I received the gold medal at my high school science fair. I am class president and am very involved in extracurricular activities. I am passionate about music and sports. I sing with the Loyola choir, play trumpet in the concert band, and have played the piano since the age of 5. I enjoy playing hockey at Loyola and was captain of my high school’s division 1 soccer team. I also play for CSMRO’s U14AA soccer team. In the future, I would like to combine my intellectual abilities with my desire to help people in order to make the world a better place.

Abstract:Every year, 2 million people in impoverished countries die due to lack of access to pacemakers/defibrillators. A total of 1051 patients from 4 South American countries received reused devices and were matched to 3153 controls with new devices implanted at the Montreal Heart Institute. Infection rates were not significantly different between groups (2.0% versus 1.2%). Pacemaker/defibrillator reuse carries the potential to save countless lives worldwide.
