Samantha - My name is Samantha Peets. I am a grade 12 student a St. Joseph's Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall, Ontario. I am the Captain of my school's Reach for the Top team, a member of Student Council, the Eco Team, and school band. I have volunteered as an assistant water safety instructor, an assistant sailing instructor, and a peer tutor. I hope to study cognitive science to learn more about how humans think and eventually unlock the mysteries of the human mind. | Jeremy - My name is Jeremy Mallette and I am one of the CWSF finalists from the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry, in Ontario. I live in a rural area with not much around. I often find myself getting swept away researching random topics on the Internet. That is what led me to my hobby in electronics and inventing/making. Since then my hobby has developed and I have built a number of devices. When approached to exhibit a new innovation at the regional science fair, I gladly accepted and began work. There are many future possibilities for my innovation, the UPOD, which are outlined in my project/presentation. My next move will be to hopefully patent the idea, as I consider it one of my more useful inventions. I want to continue down this path of creating technologies, by becoming an engineer focused on research and development. Outside of my scientific hobbies, I am wholly absorbed into the musical arts. I play various instruments, including guitar, piano, flute, and I am currently learning the violin. Apart from that, my advice to others considering the science fair is to not give up and never forget how cool your project is/can be! |

Using multiple ultrasonic sensors, it can detect various circumstances, such as surrounding objects and changes in elevation, and inform the user of them. This device solves many problems that visually impaired people face every day. With an emphasis on versatility, the UPOD has many planned features to provide service to the visually impaired. |
