Biographies
Alexandra - My name is Alexandra Skwarchuk and I am in the eighth grade of the French Immersion program at Ecole River Heights School, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My family has a cottage on Lake Winnipeg, and I enjoy spending time with nature. In recent years, the lake has been overcome with blue green algae, making it unattractive and unsafe for swimming for parts of the summer season. My science fair projects over the past two years have concentrated on finding solutions for the lake. Some of life’s biggest problems have simple solutions if you just do your part. Outside of school, I am an avid musician. I play the harp, piano and study voice. I am also a member of the Rossdale Ukrainian dance group. This year, I have enjoyed playing soccer and volleyball, and competing in French speaking competitions. I look forward to meeting many interesting people at CWSF 2014!
Wynonna - I'm Wynonna Mendoza, a grade 8 French Immersion student at Ecole River Heights School in Winnipeg, MB. At a young age, my family and I would go to the rainforests of Borneo and enjoy the wildlife there. I'm a consistent honour student and I love making art using various means such as graphite pencils, pastels and even design programs like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and a simple S Memo app on my phone. I've finished my Bronze Medallion and I'm working my way towards being a lifeguard. As for the inspiration for our project, my project partner and I learned that Lake Winnipeg was declared the 'most threatened lake in the world.' Thinking that this is a serious problem, this means that we won't be able to go there in the future. Because of what we've learned doing this project, we would like to do further investigation of what else we can do to help save it. As for my advice to other students, choose a subject that interests you and not simply aim at winning a medal or an award. It will be way cool for you to share to others what you've learned.
