Monis - I am a grade seven student at Brockville Collegiate Institute. I love reading fiction especially adventure series. My favourite series is called I am number 4. I love playing sports of all kinds and have represented in school basketball and soccer teams. I also play competitive. I want to become a doctor like my mother. I have always looked at science as a question; how, why, what if, etc. "Tell me why" are my favorite nonfiction books. I'm a science fair rookie, and one can imagine our excitement when we won the trip to Regina to compete in the CWSF. We wanted to work on a project that is relevant to every day life and of course playing with flames fascinated us. We decided to keep our project simple but practical and came up with the idea of exploring change in flammability of different upholstery fabrics sprayed with various products like stain-guard, water-guard, and fabric freshener. For future we like to do in depth analysis to reduce the flammability factor for stain-guard and water-guard. I would recommend students to come up with topics that are important to everyday life and are fun to work on. | Jack - I attend Brockville Collegiate Institute in Brockville, Ontario and this is my first Science fair. I play many sports including Hockey, Soccer and baseball. At school I enjoy science, math and gym, Outside of school I like to play with friends, explore and learn. When I grow up I would like to become surgeon or a pediatrician. Overall I have a great childhood and a loving family, I'm quite the lucky kid! When we began this project we had no idea that we would end up spending a week in Regina and speaking with some of the greatest minds Canada has to offer. If I could give any advice to kids that will take part in future science fairs it would be, Its not always the idea, It’s how you represent it and how much detail and work you put into it. In life my motto is that you should always try new things, put yourself out there and take part in as many activities as possible! |
| Monis Sayyid, Jack Sloan Learn The Burn
Challenge: | Discovery | Category: | Junior | Region: | Rideau-St. Lawrence | City: | Elizabethtown, ON, Lyn, ON | School: | Brockville Collegiate Institute | Abstract: | We tested three different of types of consumer products (water-guard, stain-guard and fabric freshener) by exposing four types of fabrics to an open flame and measuring the resulting burn to determine whether they had an impact on flammability. We concluded that water-guard and stain-guard increased the overall flammability of all upholstery fabrics which could increase the risk of injury or even death in a fire. |
