My name is Hamdi Ali and I'm a grade 12 student from Edmonton, Alberta. While I've enjoyed all the science courses I've taken in school, I hadn't had an opportunity to explore everything a science career could mean and all the different branches and fields that exist before I spent the summer as a WISEST researcher. I had the pleasure of working in a geology lab and conducting research on diamond recovery, and I've presented my research at the University of Alberta, at a Geoscience conference in Yellowknife, and now in New Brunswick! Within school, I'm part of a Science Olympics team, coding club, play rugby, and serve as Student Body President. In my own time, I like reading, playing basketball, and drawing. I really like chemistry, physics, social and math and although I'm still unsure of my career path, I hope to be able to combine my interests instead of discarding them. |
| Hamdi Ali Diamonds in the Rough: Maximizing Diamond Recovery
Challenge: | Resources | Category: | Senior | Region: | Edmonton | City: | Edmonton, AB | School: | Edmonton Islamic Academy | Abstract: | Diamonds are found naturally encased in hard mantle rock, and the conventional ways to extract diamonds used today causes irreversible damage to the diamonds within the rock. With my project, I tested a new way to extract diamonds through an instrument that would electrically separate the diamond from the rock, and found that it recovers more diamonds with less damage and is more efficient. |
