Biographies
Magda - I am a grade 9 student in Simon Fraser Middle School in Calgary, Alberta. Some of my many interests including swimming, cross-country skiing, and art. I have participated in the Calgary Youth Science Fair for four years, and this is the first year that I got into the Canada Wide Science Fair. This year, my partner and I were trying to find the dominant water source for 3 springs in a park close to Calgary. In future years, we would like to continue working together, on projects that relate to geology, hydrology, hydrogeology and biology. Advice for students who are interested in doing science fair in further years is to stay positive and enjoy doing your project.
Leah - Leah Zaitlin is a fourteen year old student at Simon Fraser Middle School. She plays the oboe in the school band, is interested in human rights and is taking a human rights course through the ASPER foundation, volunteers at homeless shelters, and enjoys being with her family, friends and pets. Leah has competed in science fair since fifth grade. This year her project was to find the primary source water of springs in Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. This project was inspired through contact with Dr. Hayashi, at the University of Calgary who was cataloging the (73) springs in the Park. Leah has no solid future plans on expanding this project. If she was to give some advice for others who want to participate in the Science Fair it would be to find a subject they are really interested in, and to not run into barbed wire fences on bikes (or bushes for that matter).

Sommaire:The purpose of this project was to determine the primary water source for the aquifers feeding springs in Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. The water chemistry of three springs, a well, and the Bow River was tested, and the springs were then compared to three different sources. The results indicated that the Paskapoo formation was the primary water source with some influence from another source.
