| Natasha - My science fair partner and I enjoy buying environmentally friendly clothes at second hand stores. Investing in used clothing cuts down on manufacturing demands, keeping materials that cannot decompose out of the landfill. We both dislike how many big brand labels use sweatshops, and would rather buy recycled clothes than show companies that we accept their use of low paid labour. Thinking about purchasing shoes from a second-hand store prompted us to research bacteria. I then became fascinated the idea that some bacteria can protects you while others seek cause illnesses, leading us to come up with our question relating to what kinds of shoes retain the most bacteria. In the future, we plan to further investigate bacteria found in shoes by spraying anti-bacterial spray instead of powder to see if the results are similar or completely different. I would also love to analyze the exact types of bacteria we found in each type of shoe and compare them to each other (what bacterial group do they belong to?, are they pathogenic or disease causing?). My advice to students who wish to create an original project is: challenge yourself by exploring new possibilities while continuing to follow your passion. | | Adriana - My name is Adriana and I am a grade 10 student. I have a passion for social justice and science! Science fair offered me a wonderful opportunity to bring these two aspects of my life together. When discussing ideas with my partner Natasha we talked about doing a project that could actually impact people and have a real life application. From this point we developed the idea of exploring what type of shoe grows the most bacteria. If we could figure this out then we could know what type of shoe we should buy if we are buying second hand. We have some ideas for further exploration including testing what type of anti bacterial spray or powder works best. I think the most important advice for students thinking about doing a project is to do something you love! Science fair takes a lot of time and energy and you will not want to do it unless you love it. The most important thing is to have fun! |

Bacteria Hysteria
