Biographies
Audrey - Audrey is a girl who is absolutely passionate about science and learning in general. She goes to Summit middle school in Coquitlam and she loves to study about science, play sports such as badminton, volleyball, and swimming. She has received numerous awards in elementary school and she also received BC nature award and a gold medal at her first ever science fair, which was held this year. Her interests are focused on school activities because Audrey loves to go to school. She has volunteered several times at school, and outside school such as at church. Audrey is dreaming to be a teacher when she grows up so she could share her knowledge to students. Before Audrey chose a project, she had a great interest in aboriginal people's lives and she found out that first nations of Canada used evergreen trees to treat various infections. She got an inspiration from her interest and the project was very successful. For further investigations, she is considering of using many various types of bacterias and type of evergreen tree leaves. Audrey would strongly suggest to not use common topics or well-known topics for science fair for future science fair participants.
Amy - A young scientist was born on December 18, 2000 in Seoul, Korea. Amy Kim currently lives in Port Moody, BC with her parents and brother. She is attending her third year at Summit Middle School. Amy is passionate about science, health and the implication they have on today's society. Amy has always idolized Einstein and his ways of learning. The honours she has received include gold medals from BC Conservatory of Music, Odyssey of the Minds, GVRSF, BC Nature Award, as well as other academic honours. In addition, Amy enjoys music, dancing, basketball and hanging out with her friends. Her current success was joining the Science Fair Club, where she met her science fair partner. Although Amy holds interests in every aspect of science, she is planning to study biology or become a podiatrist in the near future.

Antimicrobial Properties in Evergreen Tree Leaves

Abstract:Evergreen trees are used mostly for their wood, but do they have medical properties? Inspired by Canadian indigenous people, this experiment was constructed to investigate if evergreen tree leaves have antimicrobial properties that can inhibit the growth of bacteria. This project leads to creating new, natural antibiotics that can kill bacteria, treat diseases as well as infections.
