| My name is Jordan Takkkiruq. I am from Gjoa Haven, Nunavut. Gjoa Haven's winter can last as long as 9 to 10 months, while summer only last about 2 to 3 months. I go to Qiqirtaq Ilihakvik High School, the only high school in my town. I love to go hunting, fishing, and camping out on the tundra with my father. I love playing hockey, too. I also like to play video games and go sliding with my friends. My father is aboriginal and my mother is from Nova Scotia. Every summer my family and I go to my mother's home town to visit my grandparents. I only see them for 2 months of the year so I try to be with them as much as I possibly can. This has been my third Canada-Wide Science Fair in a row. I am building on my project from last year, Which Liquid Causes Tooth Decay The Fastest. This year's project test the harmfulness of chewing tobacco. I would like to become a dentist in my future so I like to study teeth. I hope that tobacco users see my project and take a second thought about using tobacco in their life. |

Tobacco Use and Effects in Gjoa Haven Youth

Part 1 is a survey on tobacco use at Qiqirtaq Ilihakvik, Gjoa Haven, NU. Of 107 students, 63% use tobacco, with 36% chewing snuff. In Part 2 caribou teeth were placed in 6 different solutions of chewing tobacco for 12 weeks. All chewing tobacco treatments reduced dry tooth mass and caused discolouration. |
