Caitlin - Hi, my name is Caitlin Shaver, and I am one of the many finalists competing in the Canada Wide Science Fair. In my spare time I like to swim, go camping, and hang out with friends. I am currently working towards becoming a lifeguard, and have 2 out of the 3 needed courses complete. I attend Brockville Collegiate Institute, and play the trumpet in the intermediate band. My partner, Bushra Khadra and I created an organic chemistry science fair project called 'Can You See The Light?'. We chose this project to broaden our knowledge of the different studies of science, and learn more about chirality and its uses in the world. We plan to further investigate chirality by experimenting with different chiral mixtures, and improving our polarimeter to give more accurate results. To other students considering a project, I would like to say be 100% sure that your variables are correct, and that you are conducting the experiment properly. For example, be sure that your setup doesn't move during the experiment, and be sure that the lighting doesn't change, as this interferes with the project's accuracy. We had to restart a couple of times due to small issues like that.
Bushra - Hello, my name is Bushra Khadra, and I am one of the finalists competing in the CWSF. In my spare time I like to read and watch debates and documentaries. I work at the Brockville Public Library as a student page. My partner, Caitlin Shaver and I created an organic chemistry science fair project called Can You See The Light. We chose this project to broaden our knowledge of the different studies of science, and learn more about chirality and its uses in the world. We plan to further investigate chirality by experimenting with different chiral mixtures, and improving our polarimeter to give more accurate results.

Can You See the Light?
Challenge:Innovation
Category:Intermediate
Region:Rideau-St. Lawrence
City:Brockville, ON
School:Brockville Collegiate Institute
Abstract:Can You See The Light is a science fair project experimenting how the different concentrations of chiral mixtures will impact their optical activity. To do this experiment we created out own polarimeter, a machine that measures the optical activity of a chiral mixture or substance.
