Biography
Brielle Lillywhite is a Grade 8 student currently attending Red Deer Lake School south of Calgary. Brielle is an honours with distinction student in all core subjects. Brielle is an accomplished dancer and musician. She has obtained her RAD Intermediate Ballet Certificate and currently performs with Corps Bara Youth Dance Company, most recently premiering "Mercy" at Mount Royal University. She has completed her Grade 5 Royal Conservatory Piano and also studies saxophone. Brielle is an active member within the school community and is involved in the Building Hope Project, raising awareness and funds to create change in our world. Last year Brielle attended the National Science Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta and won bronze in the Discovery category with “How Fast Does Your Ride Glide?”. The inspiration for “Fight the Bite – Will they Choose Dark or Light?” is the personal discomfort and allergy symptoms experienced when bitten by pesty mosquitoes. NaTHNaC and Alberta Health Services recommend wearing light coloured clothing to reduce mosquito bites, although scientific research is lacking in this area. The next step is to study the effects of fabric choices. Brielle hopes to pursue a career in education with a double major in Science and Mathematics.

Fight the Bite - Will they Choose Dark or Light?
Challenge:Discovery
Category:Junior
Region:Chinook Country
City:Okotoks, AB
School:Red Deer Lake School
Abstract:This project studied the affects of fabric colour choice on mosquito attraction to human prey. A colour choice of Dark Blue and Beige fabric was presented. The results showed the colour of fabric does not affect mosquito attraction. This research demonstrates that choosing lighter coloured clothing does not reduce mosquito attraction to human prey and thereby reduce the risk of mosquito bites and mosquito-born diseases.
