| Jaquayne - I am Jaquayne (Jack-Wayne) Mighty. I am a 13 year old student at Red River Valley Junior Academy in Winnipeg. I enjoy playing sports particularly basketball and soccer. I love music and I play the saxophone. I participate in my school’s Praise & Worship Team and the Creative Writing Club. I would like to pursue a career in Law. I am excited about the CWSF. While my school participates in many Science Fairs, this is the first time it will be represented at this level. Fossil fuels have made our lives easier in many ways. We were inspired to complete this project because we are concerned that the environment is being negatively affected by our reliance on petroleum. We believe alternative fuels can be used to reduce this over reliance. Plant biomass could be the alternative fuel for the future. We experimented to derive ethanol from corn and sugar beet biomass. Further exploration might be to derive ethanol from other feedstocks such as barley, wheat and oats. It is a great honour to be CWSF finalists. All students should enter science fairs because science is a fun subject which offers new discoveries which can make our world a better place. | | Rhyz - My name is Rhyz Abella. I’m 13 years old and in the 8th grade at Red River Valley Junior Academy. I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on August 7. My parents; Val and Romelie along with my sister Sheena, immigrated to Canada in 1994 from Philippines. In my 7 years of attending RRVJA, I have received 5 Academic Student of the Year awards and 4 Male Athlete of the Year awards. I’m maintaining a physically active lifestyle by participating in club basketball and soccer. I also express myself musically through singing in the church choir, playing saxophone in the school band. Fossil fuels have made our lives easier in many ways. We were inspired to complete this project because we are concerned that the environment is being negatively affected by our reliance on petroleum. We believe alternative fuels can be used to reduce this over reliance. I admire all my mentors, but my biggest influence is my dad. Because of him, I want to follow his footsteps by pursuing the study of civil engineering. I have done many exciting things, but being sponsored to go to the Canada Wide Science Fair, is my greatest achievement so far. |

It may be reversed by reducing its contributing factors. Over-reliance on petroleum is one of the main contributors. Finding an alternative fuel is the solution. We conducted an experiment to determine if the type of bakers yeast added to cornmeal and sugar beet feedstock’s cause the two feedstock’s to ferment differently and affect the quality and amount of ethanol yield produced. |
