Biographies
Temeara - My name is Temeara, and I’m in Grade Eight in Ontario. I like reading, skiing competitively and playing violin and piano. I have travelled across Canada and across the United States, even as far as Costa Rica. At my school, I have played soccer and volleyball as well as cross country running. I have competed in my school’s public speaking competition and have won three consecutive times, going on to speak at the City championship in 2012 and win it in 2013. In my spare time I cross country ski competitively, as well as running in the summer. I have taken Girl Guides and 5 years of sewing lessons in the past, as well as earning my Bronze Cross in Red Cross Lifeguarding. I received inspiration for this project from my own interest in how humans function, if they can be fooled. If I were to further investigate this project, I would test adult’s taste buds as well as varying the flavour of pop (lemon lime to root beer, or pepsi etc.). My advice to other students thinking about doing a project is to stick with it, and don’t be afraid to mess up. Mistakes only help you grow.
Kara - I have played numerous sports in school involving soccer, basketball, volleyball etc. My favourite sport is soccer, as I play on a competitive team in my city. I competitively danced for seven years winning recognition in the studio and at competitions. I recently just concluded an acting endeavour, as I performed in a city wide production of 'Oliver'. I am currently enrolled in piano lessons. I recently took a refereeing clinic and I am now a certified soccer referee. I was excepted in the International Baccalaureate Programme to begin in Grade Nine and I am taking a Reach Ahead Math course. One of my most memorable experiences was attending We Day in Toronto. I plan on becoming a paediatrician when I am older. The foundation of my project came from my interest in the human brain and how it can be so easily manipulated. If we were to take our project further we would test a wider age range for a sample (ex. adults). My recommendation to other students planning on creating a project is to realize how much of a commitment it is to be successful. If you want to go far, be willing to give the effort.

Power of Suggestion
Défi:Découverte
Catégorie:Junior
Région:Algoma Rotary
Ville:Sault Ste Marie, ON, Sault.Ste.Marie, ON
École:Grandview P.S.
Sommaire:Power of Suggestion is an experiment conducted to test if colour affects taste perception. We wanted to know if one sense could evoke another (synaesthesia). We coloured lemon-lime pop to look like common flavours (grape, cherry and orange), then asked participants: What flavour was it? Majority believed colour was related to the taste. You’d be surprised how easily the brain can be tricked.
