Biography
Growing up, I was very fortunate to have parents that loved to host dinner discussions on various things. Of course, the "things" encompassed everything from international politics to poetry, and finally to the newest science innovations. Through those discussions, I was able to generate the first spark of an idea for my science fair project. I am also very thankful for Dr. Lingyun Chen from the University of Alberta for mentoring and supporting me in this project. With her help, I was able to collect data from various science journals and create a literary review on the lotus seed's potential commercial usage as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases and identify research gaps for further experimentation. In the future, I hope that I have the chance to perform these experiments and generate a new type of treatment for neurodegenerative diseases using the lotus seed.

Abstract:Lotus seed is a Chinese traditional herb used to treat symptoms extremely similar to the ones of neurodegenerative diseases. However, currently there is little scientific evidence behind it. This study is a literature review which summarizes and analyzes different findings on the chemical properties of the lotus seed and identifies research gaps to pave the way for further experimentation on the lotus seed.
