Julia - My name is Julia Nguyen and I am currently in Grade 7 in the Sci Tech Program at Tomken Road Middle School, Mississauga, Ontario. My hobbies include listening to music as well as playing piano and the acoustic guitar. I also practice a variety of sports including soccer, basketball, baseball, track and field, cross country, and taekwondo. In my free time I enjoy reading, drawing and painting, and occasionally going swimming or skiing. In the future, I plan to work in the field of science and technology, which is one of my strongest subjects at school. This year for Science Fair, I partnered up with Carla, and we focused on creating an organic alternative to commercial insecticides. We are both very pleased with our progress, but we do plan to expand our project by improving upon our product so it could be placed in the market. Of course, I haven't had much experience with science fair, but some advice I'd give to the many other young scientists out there would be to aim high and work towards your goals. It is not expected of you to win gold; what matters is how much effort you put in to reach it. | Carla - My name is Carla Bang and I am currently in Grade 7 and partake in the Sci-Tech Program of Tomken Road Middle School in Mississauga, Ontario. I was born in Torrence, California to Korean parents and moved from New Jersey to Mississauga when I was 6 years old making me a proud Korean-American-Canadian. I’m heavily involved in my school community, participating in a variety of clubs. Though, I value athletic council and peel intermediate honor choir the most. My main interests include reading, dancing, singing, and running. I also enjoy sports such as track and field, cross country, baseball, handball, and hockey. For the future I plan to try to major in chemistry, however my knowledge in chemistry is limited currently and I'm still very young therefore it may change. However, chemistry is something that fascinates me and I really want to learn more about it.This year for science fair, my partner Julia and I focused on creating an effective and eco-friendly alternative to insecticides that you can find on the market. We did so by creating a spray called the "ferti-pellent", which we hope can change the unfortunate popularity of insecticides in the world. |

This alternative was created in the form of a spray and called the “ferti-pellent” because of its repelling and fertilizing properties. The spray was tested using garden snails and was compared to a store-bought insecticide to determine its overall effectiveness. |
