Biographies
Emma - My name is Emma Regier and I am a Grade 8 student at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School. I am very competitive and try to excel in everything I do. I believe this is because of all the different sports I play: hockey, soccer, swimming and volleyball. My post-secondary plan is to enter the medical field and in particular, dermatology. A problem that many girls encounter daily is split ends. This is when the inspiration of this project came to us; ”How is the best way I can keep my hair looking healthy but, at the same time still use heating tools to give me the style I want?”. My friend Jillian Regier and I decided we wanted an experiment to find out the best method to protect our hair from heat by using different heat protectants. In the future, Jill and I want to further investigate whether heat has a different effect on artificially treated hair. My recommendation to students wanting to do a project is to ask a question that interests you. Science exists in every aspect of our lives. To look for an answer, you just need to be willing to experiment.
Jillian - My name is Jillian Regier and I am a grade 8 student at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School. I enjoy playing ice hockey, swimming, baseball and performing in plays at our local theater. I love music and singing, and I have achieved a level of Grade 5 in piano. I am creative and I have always been interested in science and experiments. Styling my hair in the morning was my inspiration for this project. I wanted to ensure I was doing everything I could to keep my hair healthy and prevent split ends and damage when straightening it with a flat iron. My friend, Emma Regier and I decided to do a science experiment to test heat protectants, and find solutions and ways to prevent split ends and damage. Our plans are to further investigate how heat may dull, fade, or change colour treated hair. My advice to students thinking about doing a project is to choose a subject that really interests you because it makes it more fun, and makes you more passionate about your project. I also advise making sure you try to avoid bias as much as possible and leave no room for error.

Sommaire:Extensive heat is known to be harmful to hair. In this experiment, we looked at how heat affects hair, how different heat protective formulas can protect hair, and how different hair products affect hair after using a hot flat iron to straighten it. We wanted to find solutions to protect hair from heat damage and keep it looking and feeling healthy.
