I am a student at Ecole les Cypres, a bilingual school in Medicine Hat. I became interested in plants and we were doing a project at school so I had a mint plant with one stem and one with two and one died so I wanted to learn why the other survived. That led me to some research on nodes and how to stimulate root growth from nodes. My research showed that if plants are to grow from cuttings, there must be a node in the water. I am experimenting with more cuttings from different plants to see if I can reproduce the results. Next steps are to try and experiment with other plant species. My advice to other students would be to be prepared to explore new directions that the original research suggested, and be patient with your project. |

Challenge: | Discovery | Category: | Junior | Region: | Southeast Alberta | City: | Medicine Hat, AB | School: | Ecole Les Cypres | Abstract: | I attempted to grow roots from mint plant cuttings in water, some with one stem and some with two, to see which would grow roots faster. After observing what part of the stem the roots were growing from, I decided to do more research on nodes and internodes, and the parts and systems of plants that cause roots to grow. |
