| Hi! My name is Woo Joo Kwon and I am a grade eleven IB student from British Columbia. I've had a passion for science for as long as I can remember and I'm excited to participate in CWSF 2016! My project was inspired by the recent study showing an interesting microbiome correlation between young children with pet dogs in the household, and these children's decreased risk of getting asthma. I hope to further investigate the differences in the impact of indoor dogs and outdoor dogs on their owners' microbiota. Apart from science research, I am a professional fencer. Being on the Canadian National Team I have represented Canada at many international competitions, and have competed nationally as well. I am the founder and the head coach of the fencing club at my school. I also lead the Science Club at my school and avidly volunteer at local hospitals, retirement homes, and am launching a health awareness magazine with a group of students. Science projects are one of my ways of knowing and understanding how the world works. I encourage anyone to make their scientific idea come to life, because they will always learn something fascinating or discover something new. |

Comparing the Oral Microbiota Population and Diversity of Indoor/Outdoor Dogs

My project examines the differences in the oral microbiota of indoor and outdoor dogs. The results show that while outdoor dogs retain a greater diversity in their microbiota, such diversity limits the harboring bacteria that reduce risk of asthma. |
