Biography
My name is Jessica Dekker. I am a grade eight student at St.Joseph's School in Hamilton, Ontario. I play on a competitive volleyball team and I enjoy playing many other sports such as soccer and basketball. Some of my hobbies include reading and photography. Next year I will be attending St.Mary's high school. I used to be a competitive Irish dancer and competed at a national level. While I was doing Irish dance, I suffered numerous injuries and I would often have to take pain medication. As I was thinking about a topic for my science fair project my dancer background inspired me to see if children had the same ability as I did to open child resistant medicine containers, as I was able to open them at a younger age. I hope to in the future to create an effective child resistant container to ensure the safety of children and reduce medication poisonings.

Abstract:This experiment is an investigation of the effectiveness of child resistant lids on medicine bottles. Two hundred children were tested from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8. Each test subject was given 3 medicine bottles with child resistant lids and a control bottle with an easy open lid. Child resistant lids on medicine bottles aren’t as effective as they used to be when first developed.
