Biography
My name is Brandon He, and I am a 14 year old Grade 8 student from Silver Stream Public School. I am from Richmond Hill, Ontario, and I am very interested in Science, Technology, and Mathematics. I've always wanted to find out ways to help the environment, and last year for my project I used food waste to produce paper, and while reading projects, I came upon one project that used leftover fats and oils to produce biodiesel. However, I did not find that experiment very applicable as collecting just vegetable oil requires an effort, so I wanted to see if all fats can be combined together to produce biodiesel, which is a eco-friendlier fuel than petroleum. For further investigations, I would like to see how the whole recycling of these wastes would work, and also how much of an impact we can make by simply collecting these oils and fats. Some advice for other students thinking about doing a project is to find a topic that intrigues them, not just for the sake of doing a project. Find something that you really want to learn more about, and from there it won't be work, but will be fun.

Fuelling our Future with...Waste?

Abstract:In this project, waste vegetable oils and animal fats were mixed to produce biodiesel. It was found that waste oils and fats, regardless of their types and how they are combined, could be converted into biodiesel. This finding suggest that households and restaurants can put different types of used oils/fats in a recycling jar for biodiesel production to fuel our future.
